T
his summer Terrain has again been awarded a research grant from Princeton to create and develop a new dance. Intensive rehearsals began in May and we will continue work until we leave for the White Mountain Summer Dance Festival on July 15th. 2006 marks the fourth year I have directed the festival and Terrain has been in residence. During the three week festival I teach a daily technique class, and colleagues from NYU, Juilliard and George Mason University teach ballet, yoga, anatomy, repertory, music, and much more. The company participates in classes, rehearses every afternoon, and performs weekly. The festival culminates with two public performances that feature all of the participants performing in faculty works. This year Renée Archibald will create a new work on students and Jennifer Lafferty

will stage a piece of Terrain repertory, A Stone's Throw. Immediately following the festival we head to The Yard on Martha's Vineyard for 7 days to teach, perform, rehearse, and spend time on the beach. Terrain has been invited to host a mini dance festival for young dancers on the Island and will perform in a fundraising event for The Yard, August 10-12 with Susan Marshall and David Dorfman. We are thrilled to return to The Yard, to be on a program with such luminaries of the dance world, and to catch up on our seafood intake! In November we have been invited to present Transparent Body, our collaboration with electric violinist and recent Guggenheim award winner Dan Trueman, at the International Conference on Computer Music. We were selected from over 500 applicants for this prestigious event, hosted by Tulane University in New Orleans. The conference will also provide us opportunities to work with Habitat for Humanity to help rebuild communities affected by Hurricane Katrina.

In the fall we will be busily preparing for the performances of Serenade: My First Ballet at Princeton University on December 8th and 9th. Prior to the formal performances we will present multiple informal showings in New York to allow audiences to see the dance and participate in discussions about the choreography and process. In January we will return to our work-in-progress, currently titled Dance Phase; we will premiere both dances in New York in the late Spring. If you would like to be notified of all of the informal showings, please send an email to info@terraindance.org or check back here for regular updates. We hope to see you soon!
